Five labor activists released from jail last week after nearly six months in detention will be sent to Thailand for medical treatment, a rights worker said Monday.
Am Sam Ath, lead investigator for the rights group Lichado, said the organization plans to send the five men for treatment of injuries they sustained when they were beaten by security forces in January’s demonstration crackdowns.
The five men were part of a group of 25 who received suspended sentences last week on charges related to violence in demonstrations in January.
They received inadequate healthcare while in jail, Am Sam Ath said. “They need to be healed, because they were seriously wounded.”
One of them, Von Pov, was seriously injured in the head and has not fully recovered, Am Sam Ath said. He and four others will travel to Thailand for treatment next week, he added.
