PHNOM PENH - Family members of a street vendor killed during clashes between protesters and police last week say they may press charges or seek compensation for her death.
The rights group Adhoc says it is ready to provide the family with a lawyer, after Eng Sokhom, 49, was struck in the chest by a bullet during the violence. She died later in the hospital.
Ny Chakrya, lead investigator for the group, said Phnom Penh authorities and the national government should bear responsibility for the incident and should provide compensation to the family.
“We need compensation,” her brother, Eng Sok, told VOA Khmer. “She died unfairly.”
Police have so far denied responsibility for the shooting. Officials for the city and the Ministry of Interior were not available for comment Tuesday.
