Members of the ruling party and opposition met Wednesday to discuss amendments to the election law for local commune councils.
The meeting comes amid political tensions between the two sides over opposition calls for the halt of alleged Vietnamese encroachment along the border.
Officials said the meeting strictly focused on the election law, not on the border issue, nor the detention of opposition activists.
“We have agreed on almost everything,” Rescue Party Vice President Kem Sokha said in a Facebook post. “There are five remaining points that we need to do further study and we’ll meet again next week.”
The five points are election campaign procession, campaign period, raising party signs in public places, punishment, and reprimands on civil servants.
“This is a continuation to implement the ‘culture of dialogue,’” said Sak Setha, a Cambodian People’s Party member and secretary of state for the Ministry of Interior.
Commune council elections are scheduled to take place in February 2017.
