Prime Minister Hun Sen left Cambodia Wednesday for UN summits in New York, where hundreds of Cambodian-Americans are preparing to protest, demanding the release of political and environmental activists currently in detention in the country.
“It is time for the world’s leaders to make meaningful action against kleptocratic dictators, such as the regime in Cambodia,” organizers said in a statement.
They are also calling for free and fair national elections in 2018 and a “peaceful transfer of authority” should the ruling Cambodian People’s Party lose that election.
Hun Sen is expected to give speeches at the UN summit for the “Post-2015 Development Agenda” and the “Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment.” He will also meet with CPP supporters in the US.
