Republican Mitt Romney, who lost the White House to President Barack Obama in 2012, has announced he will not be running for the office in 2016.

The former Massachusetts governor made the announcement in a conference call with supporters Friday.

He had recently said he was considering a potential campaign. But as he sought to rally support, several of his past fundraisers reportedly told him they are backing former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, brother of Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush.

This would have been Romney's third try for the presidency, after he also sought his party's nomination in 2008.
