HIV Youth Conference Opens in Vietnam

International health experts have opened a conference in Vietnam focusing on the impact HIV/AIDS has on children in the East Asia and Pacific region.

Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem opened the three-day conference Wednesday in Hanoi.

The meeting has drawn more than 200 delegates from U.N. agencies, governments and non-governmental organizations.

The event is expected on focus on topics including mother-to-child transmission of HIV, the provision of drugs to children suffering from the disease and the creation of awareness groups.

U.N. estimates reported by the Associated Press indicate more than 120-thousand children in the Asia-Pacific region have been infected with the disease.
