Muslim Outrage Over Prophet Cartoon Continues Despite Appeals for Calm

Protests against the publication of cartoons in Europe depicting the Prophet Mohammed are spreading further across the Muslim world despite appeals for calm.

Three people were killed in Afghanistan when police opened fire to disperse demonstrators. In India, Muslim students burned a Danish flag in New Delhi while business in Indian Kashmir closed today (Monday) in protest.

In Tehran, Iranian protesters threw fire bombs at the Austrian embassy. Protesters burned Danish diplomatic posts in Syria and Lebanon over the past two days.

Demonstrations were also held in Mali and Nigeria.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged Muslims to accept the apology from the Danish newspaper that first printed the caricatures. French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy also appealed for calm.

The cartoons, which Muslims consider blasphemous, appeared in a Danish newspaper in September before being reprinted in various European cities.
