WASHINGTON DC - A group of Cambodian-American medical volunteers will travel to Takeo province in February to provide free medical treatment and check-ups to the rural poor.

The team, which will include more than 150 medical personnel, will offer a wide range of services, including eye and dental care, said Tan Song, a doctor and director of the Cambodian Health Professionals Association of America.

“Cambodian people suffer from a lot of general illnesses,” he said. For the elderly, that can include diabetes, high blood pressure, dermatology and lung disease. For the young, it can be malnutrition and other illnesses that harm their growth.

Tan Song, who has made two previous visits under a similar program, said Cambodians rarely see doctors, and some have not seen a dentist in 15 years.

“We will include health awareness education on dental care and health care as well,” said Dr. Tan Song. “They have to exercise in order to have good health.”
