PHNOM PENH - Unesco representatives from than 120 countries are meeting in Phnom Penh to discuss an updated World Heritage site list.
Representatives are tackling tough questions about the future of the site list, as well as the future of some sites.
There has been a lot of debate about the future of the convention, how important the World Heritage is, the notion about heritage and the need of its protection within the world, Irina Bokova, secretary general of the UN’s cultural organization, told reporters in Phnom Penh Monday, following a half-day meeting.
The representatives are debating proposals for World Heritage sites from 31 countries.
The conference, which began Sunday, includes some 1,500 delegates and will take place over the next 10 days in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
Roni Amelan, a spokesman for Unesco, said he expects about 15 sites to be listed during the session.
