PHNOM PENH - A Russian tycoon who has been in jail since late December was released on bail Wednesday.

Sergei Polonsky, 41, has been in detention in the coastal province of Preah Sihanouk since Dec. 30, when he was arrested for assault.

Polonsky, an investor in a luxury hotel in the province, was accused forcing six members of a boat crew overboard after an altercation off the coastal island of Dek Korl. Two other Russians arrested with him were granted bail earlier this year.

“The court has released him on bail,” Polonsky’s attorney, Long Salux, told reporters Wednesday. “The reason is that it was just a misdemeanor, not a serious crime and he has a legitimate business.”

Polonsky’s translator, Tel Samut, said the defendant was pleased with his release.

“This morning he didn’t say anything because he seemed to be too excited,” Tel Samut said. “He only hugged me and shook hands with his lawyer.”
