PHNOM PENH - The opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party has brought corrected documentation on candidate registration to the National Election Committee.
The NEC said it is examining the documents to determine whether it will accept the party’s registration for the July 28 elections.
“What the NEC asked us to correct we have already corrected this morning,” CNRP spokesman Yem Bunharith told VOA Khmer Wednesday. “We examined, one by one, the names and dates of birth of the candidates, at both the constituency and national levels, as well as the certificates from the communes and the candidates’ declarations.”
The Cambodia National Rescue Party registered last week along with seven other parties. The NEC says it found mistakes with the spellings and dates of birth for more than 20 candidates. The party has registered 387 separate candidates for various posts, including 123 as full candidates for National Assembly seats across 24 provinces and municipalities.
NEC Secretary-General Tep Nitha said the additional documents submitted by the party are now being reviewed by a technical working group and will be brought before the full NEC board for discussion and a final decision on Thursday.
