Prime Minister Hun Sen is seeking Japanese investors to fund an $800 million skytrain linking Phnom Penh International Airport to the city center.

In a statement posted to his Facebook page, Hun Sen said he was visiting Japan for three days from Sunday to meet potential investors for the project.

He said in a video posted on Facebook that he would meet Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to sign two deals worth about $240 million.

He added that during the meeting he would also discuss the skytrain project.

On the first two days of his visit, Hun Sen met with Grand Price Naruhito, as well as business leaders who may wish to invest in Cambodia.

The proposed skytrain would be the first project of its kind in Cambodia, while officials would hope the new system would help ease Phnom Penh’s increasing congestion.

According to official figures, there are more than 2 million vehicles on Phnom Penh’s streets, while the government estimates traffic jams cost the economy $6 million per month.

The Cambodian delegation was due to return to Cambodia on Wednesday.
