Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday said he hoped that the forthcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would bring peace to the region.
His comments came after a successful meeting between Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in in April, which led to hopes of a de-escalation of the standoff on the peninsula and denuclearization.
Trump said last week that he would meet Jong Un on June 12 in Singapore.
Speaking on Monday, Hun Sen said he was happy to see a more positive dialogue developing between the two governments, adding that he hoped the meeting could end the conflict on the peninsula.
“For the past few weeks, there was a good and historical meeting between president Moon Jae-in of South Korea and the leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un, which is very pleasing for Cambodians, in expecting that the situation on the Korea peninsula will have greater developments,” Hun Sen said on Monday.
“And, we are waiting for a historical meeting, which is going to happen between the US President and leader of North Korea. Currently, the meeting seems to be prepared already in Singapore,” Hun Sen said.
Cambodia’s relations with North Korea were built during the reign of King Norodom Sihanouk and Kim Jong Un’s grandfather, Kim Il-sung.
But the relationship has soured somewhat in recent years, with Cambodia expressing unhappiness at North Korea’s ballistic missile tests.
