Khmer Rouge Tribunal Witness Warned Against Perjury

The international prosecutor at the UN-backed Khmer Rouge tribunal has warned a witness against perjury.

During questioning Monday, prosecutor Nicholas Koumjian reminder witness Neang Ouch he had sworn an oath and could be charged with perjury, after the witness denied knowledge of a Khmer Rouge policy that assigned people to work cooperatives in Traim Kak district, Takeo province.

Neang Ouch, 72, is testifying in the second and final phase of the atrocity crimes trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan. He denied having an official position as secretary-general in the district, then known as District 105.

Koumjian then reminded him of the tribunal’s rules on testimony and perjury, though Neang Ouch continued to downplay his role with the regime in the district. His testimony will resume on Tuesday.
