Cambodia has offered its congratulations to the Korean nations after they agreed to a historic deal that would allow international nuclear inspectors to observe the dismantling of facilities key to Pyongyang’s nuclear program.
Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader, said on Wednesday that he had agreed to let international inspectors observe the process.
South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in said at a joint press conference that the move heralded the end of a long state of war on the Korean peninsula.
A second round of inter-Korea talks wrapped up on Wednesday with the signing of the September Pyongyang Declaration and a comprehensive military agreement.
The latter document outlined several steps to ease military tensions.
The joint announcement on Wednesday marked the end of scheduled talks between the two states.
Phay Siphan, Cambodian government spokesman, said Phnom Penh, welcomed the successful conclusion of the meeting.
“Cambodia believes that the dialogue between the two countries is the foundation of ensuring and establishing the confidence and trust as well as the support of many partners. Peace is the foundation and it’s also the desire of all human kind, which Cambodia highly values and consistently practices,” he said.
“Cambodia is a signatory to the treaty and international convention as well as regional convention in opposing the production, usage, storage, and trafficking of nuclear weapons, chemical weapons and relevant weapons,” he added.
Chheang Vannarith, a regional analyst, said he was optimistic that the talks had improved the security situation in the region.
“It was positive and strategic trust has been improved. Cambodia has been advocating for a peaceful and nuclear-free Korean peninsular.”
Kim Jong-un agreed during the talks to permanently dismantle missile test facilities at Dongchang-ri under the observation of international inspectors. He also expressed an intent to dismantle the Yongbyon nuclear test site, although that would be contingent on the United States taking “corresponding actions.”
