Desperate Families Seek Government Intervention - 2005-01-03

About 50 people from Battambang province said they are losing their lands and are asking prime minister Hun Sen and the government for help.

The group said they have been living on the lands which were given to them by the former Battambang governor since 1996 but now the court is giving them to a couple who claimed the lands belong to them.

The Battambang court cannot be reached for comments because today is a government holiday.

However, prime minister Hun Sen's top advisor Om Yintieng said he was aware of the problem and that the government will write a letter to the local authority to look into the people's claims.
