NGO leaders Worry about the Immunity of SRP Members - 2004-11-01

Political observers and NGO leaders worry about the attempt to suspend the immunity of the SRP members so that they can answer the court's questions on charges against them.

The NGO leaders have urged the national assembly president Norodom Ranariddh to abandon the idea.

They said they are worried that the opposition party would be destroyed and that Cambodia would no longer have an active opposition party.

Prince Norodom Ranariddh said on Sunday that the national assembly will decide this week whether or not to suspend the parliamentary immunity of Mr. Sam Rainsy and two other SRP members.

Prince Ranariddh said he is only following the rules and that the matter is beyond his control.
