People from Kompong Speu Protested in Phnom Penh - 2004-08-10

Almost 300 people from Kompong Speu province protested in front of the National Assembly building in Phnom Penh on Tuesday to demand the Members of Parliament intervene in their land dispute with Cambodia's State Secretary in charge of Women's and Veterans' Affairs, Mrs. You Oy.

The protesters claimed they have owned and lived on their land since 1993, and Mrs. Oy offerd to buy their property below market value, but they refused to sell.

They also demand the release of the village chief whom police arrested Saturday on Mrs. Oy's charges that he refused to vacate the land he sold to her and that he asked other people to come and settle on her land.
