Cambodian men are not ready to accept women as commune officers yet, according to a female council member.
Mrs. Sok Saroeun is a commune council member in Tuol Kork district from the Sam Rainsy Party. She said she faced hardship in her role as district deputy chief.
Mrs. Sok Saroeun told VOA she never had a chance to accomplish her job as a first district deputy chief since she was elected in February, 2002.
In her role as the first commune deputy, she is in charge of the economic and financial affairs during the absence of the district chief.
However she said the district chief is not ready to give her those responsibilities when he's out of town.
