Parliamentarians spent Friday discussing a draft law on the protection of the environment.
The law would seek to curb illegal logging and the poaching of wild animals, two areas of environmental destruction the government has traditionally been unable to stop.
A draft law under discussion would create natural parks, wildlife sanctuaries, natural estates, historical sites and cultural areas.
Environment Minister Mok Mareth said Friday said ministry wildlife rangers already have legal means to stop environmental crimes, but "we still have illegal logging and animal poaching."
He said there were ways to limit logging, too, but the new law makes the offense of illegal logging more serious.
