Amnesty International Condems Displacement of 117 Families

Amnesty International Tuesday condemned the eviction with excessive force of 117 families from Sihanoukville land and urged authorities to provide the displaced with adequate accommodation.

"The police reportedly used excessive force during the eviction, and several people on both sides were inured," Amnesty International said. "A 77-year-old man is still in hospital. Over 100 homes were destroyed."

Hundred of villagers are now homeless as a result, the group said.

Displacement is a growing problem in Cambodia, with the poor increasingly thrown off land to make room for further development in the growing economy.

"Forced evictions are a grave violation of a range of human rights," Amnesty said, urging authorities to "immediately ensure that those made homeless are provided with emergency relief including shelter, food, water and access to medical assistance."

The group was also worried at reports of excessive force and called for a full inquiry, "with those responsible brought to justice and the findings of the inquiry made public."
