Cambodia Readies for International Women's Day

Cambodia will celebrate International Women's Day Thursday with activities including a goods exhibition in Phnom Penh sponsored by the Ministry of Women's Affairs. The exhibition will display more than 100 kinds of goods produced by Cambodian women, including scarves, silk hand bags and food products.

The exhibition showed that women can be self-reliant and independent, Sou Channa, of the group Kai Vehya Neary Kampuchea, told VOA.

Nou Sam Aun, from the association Dom Sneng Mouy, said that women from her group had brought to the exhibition chemical-free fruits and vegetables.

The women from her organization had overcome many difficulties, she said.

Cambodian women make many contributions to the nation, Khim Chamroeun, undersecretary at the Ministry of Women's Affairs, said. They have the conscience, thought and intelligence to participate in the development of the country and should not hide their special abilities, she said.

History has shown that Cambodian women can be heroic leaders, and women today should follow in their footsteps, Ou Bun, vice governor of Phnom Penh, said.
