The U.S. guided missile frigate USS Gary, which arrived in Sihanoukeville’s port on February 9, has officially left Cambodia Tuesday, according to an official.
Their last U.S. major operation was 30 years ago, and it was a mission to rescue the crew of a merchant ship captured by the Khmer Rouge. The rescue was successful but at a price of 41 US troop’s deaths, and it marked the start of a long period of US antipathy towards Cambodia.***
Cambodia and the World Bank had signed an agreement on a $14 million dollars project. The World Bank announced Wednesday that it will resume disbursements for three projects that were previously suspended in 2006, due to suspected corruption practices.
The grant is to give financial support and accountability on the government's resources in Cambodia, according to the World Bank’s statement. Minister of Finance Keat Chhon supports the decision and believed that it will lead to economic reform in the country.***
The Phnom Penh Municipal court has summoned Prince Norodom Ranariddh last Thursday for the illegal selling of its former Funcinpec party's headquarters. Prince Ranariddh allegedly sold the headquarters for $3.6 million dollars to Ly Chhuong Company last year.***
