Funcinpec party asks the Phnom Penh court Tuesday to speed up its lawsuit against Prince Norodom Ranariddh, for allegedly selling its former headquarters and for pocketing the money. The party also urges the court to detain the prince during the investigation.
Ranariddh was removed from Funcinpec party last year by the party's extraordinary congress. He has since formed a party called 'Norodom Ranariddh Party'.
Funcinpec Secretary General Nhek Bun Chhay says the prince sold the headquarter unilaterally. In a press release, Funcinpec states the arrest would help to ease the legal procedure. The Phnom Penh court has yet to response to Funcinpec's request.
In another development, opposition lawmaker Keo Remy is asking the legislative and executive branches to draft a bill that would protect former head of state. He argues that without the much-needed protection, the country’s leader might not be willing to step down.
Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was found guilty of killing innocent Kurdish while he was in power. Saddam was executed at the end of December 2006.
Teachers at the Preah Riechboniyakec high school in Stung Treng province are appealing to the local education officials for their salaries to be paid on time. In an interview with VOA, one of the teachers said that they have not been paid for the past 2 months.
