Officials Deny Bribes Paid to Obtain Heng Pov

A top Cambodian official denies charges that he bribed Malaysian officials to secure Heng Pov's return back to Cambodia.

Former Phnom Penh commissioner Heng Pov fled from Cambodia to Singapore and then Malaysia. He was charged by the Phnom Penh court of a number of crimes.

Recently, the Finnish government grants Heng Pov a political asylum visa to enter into Finland. However, last week Heng Pov was sent by back to Cambodia and is currently detained in Prey Sar prison in Phnom Penh.

First Interpol police chief, Keo Vanthan denies reports that the Cambodian government bribed the Malaysian officials to have Heng Pov sent back to the country.

French newspaper L'Express published an article claiming that $10 million dollars were spent by the Cambodian government to the Malaysian officials.

The Malaysian Embassy in Phnom Penh cannot be reached for comment. While, the Ministry of Interior's spokesman Lieutenant General Khieu Sopheak says that the bribery is unfounded and ridiculous.
