Parliament Debates Traffic Law

The National Assembly meets Friday to discuss a traffic bill aimed to reduce accidental deaths and injuries on Cambodian roads.

The draft law sets the speed limit in the cities at between 30 to 40 km per hour. Among other requirements, it's mandatory that the drivers wear seat belts and motorcycle drivers to wear helmets. It also forbids the use of cell phones without the hand-free device when driving.

Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol tells the National Assembly that the new traffic law is needed to save lives.

The traffic law includes jail terms and monetary fines for those who break the laws.

Opposition lawmaker Son Chhay expressed concerns about Cambodian police abusing the new law, and using it as a tool to extort money from the people.
