Cambodia Reacts to HRW Tribunal Criticisms

Cambodian high-ranking official Wednesday disagreed with the statement of a human rights group that said the government is interfering with the work of the Extraordinary Chamber of the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).

Om Yentieng, a senior advisor of Prime Minister Hun Sen, said Human Rights Watch always criticizes the Cambodian government.

"Human Right Watch does not have anything else better to say beside criticizing the Cambodian government", Om Yentieng added.

Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith dismissed the watchdog group's allegation as "politically motivated."

In a statement Tuesday, Brad Adams, Asia director at the New York-based Human Rights Watch said that "the government [has] control over the Cambodian judicial system, and the Khmer Rouge tribunal has always been a grave concern".

The response came after the international and the Cambodian judicial officials could not agree on a decision to adopt the 110 draft rules for running the tribunal.
