SRP Lawmaker Wants to Help End Border Incident with Thailand


Opposition lawmaker, Son Chhay says he will write a letter to the new Thai Prime Minister to seek a compromise between Thailand and Cambodia after Cambodia accused Thai soldiers of crossing the border into Cambodia to destroy Cambodian houses on November 29th in the northwest.

Son Chhay tells VOA by phone Friday that he wishes to see a resolution in the border incident.

Some 300 Thai soldiers allegedly crossed the border into Cambodia and destroyed Cambodian homes along the border. They allegedly told the villagers that the houses were built on the overlapping border areas in Tuol Prasard village, Poi Pet commune, O Chrov district, and Bantteay Meanchey province.

Lt. Col Khuon Vanna , Infantry Army of Cambodia who is stationed at the border tells VOA Khmer that the area tend to cause confusion, because the canal that divides the two countries have split into three small canals. He went on to say, that this makes it difficult for both sides to judge which canal is the main one.

Cambodian government spokesman Khieu Kanharith says Cambodia has sent troops to the location to help make the people feel safer.
