Bomb Blast Kills 14 in Southern Afghanistan

Officials in Afghanistan say at least 14 people have been killed in a bomb blast in the southern province of Uruzgan.

A provincial government spokesman said the blast occurred Friday on a road leading to Uruzgan's capital, Tirin Kot. It was not immediately clear who may have been behind the blast.

Taleban insurgents have been blamed for most roadside bombings and suicide attack in Afghanistan.

On Thursday, local officials in southern Kandahar province said NATO operations killed at least 60 civilians earlier in the week week.

NATO officials dispute that account, saying 12 civilians were killed and 48 insurgents died in the clashes Tuesday. The alliance also says it is not clear if the civilians were killed because of Taleban or NATO action.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has appointed a commission to investigate.
