Heng Pov's Lawyer Hopes His Client Get Political Asylum

The lawyer of fugitive former police commissioner, Heng Pov hopes that his client will be able to receive political asylum in a third country, and vows to do everything possible to prevent extradition from being proceeded.

Speaking by phone Monday, David Chen told VOA that according to international law Heng Pov should not return to his country where he will be in fear for his life.

Mr. Chen says he hopes the international community will support his client in his endeavor to obtain asylum in a third country.

Mr. David Chen alleges that Mr. Heng Pov has left Singapore, and will not be extradited.

Heng Pov's lawyer praises the Singaporean authorities for not extraditing his client. He says Singapore's decision shows that Singapore is abiding by its international obligation by not returning a refugee seeker to his own country.

Mr. Heng Pov was charged by Phnom Penh Municipal Court of a number of serious crimes, including the murder of judge Sok Sethamony. He was arrested by the Singaporean authorities for immigration and visa violations.

In a nine-page report, Heng Pov implicated Prime Minister Hun Sen, National Police Commissioner, Hok Lundy, and other top officials in several criminal cases.

The Cambodian government says Heng Pov is a wanted criminal desperate for an asylum and is making up stories to win his case.
