Prime Minister Hun Sen Tuesday proposes to the Minister of Justice to amend article 63 of the United Nations Transitional Authority for Cambodia (UNTAC) penal code and submit it to the National Assembly for approval.
This move will lead to the repeal of the official conviction by imprisonment for defamation.
The statement was made after the Minister of Justice Ang Vong Vatana and Mr. Duk Munti President of the Supreme Court told all the judges to rule according to article 63, and after the alliance for freedom of speech in Cambodian and the foreign press federation protest.
Prime Minister Hun Sen makes the statement at the inauguration of a technical-medical building in Phnom Penh, saying he called Mr. Ang Vong Vatana to make amendments for article 63 of the UNTAC law repealing the defamation law punishable by imprisonment, but keeping the fine.
