Philippine Protesters Mark People Power Anniversary, Call for President's Ouster

Thousands of protesters called for the removal of Philippine President Gloria Arroyo during demonstrations marking the 20th anniversary of the "People Power" movement.

Demonstrators briefly scuffled with police in Manila today (Wednesday) as they pulled down metal barricades erected to stop them from reaching a monument memorializing the downfall of dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986.

At least three thousand people joined the demonstration.

Twenty years after the popular revolt, many Filipinos say today's politics are still tainted by the corruption and patronage characteristic of the Marcos dictatorship.

Today's demonstration came amid a government investigation into an alleged coup plot aimed at overthrowing the president.
