The European Parliament's members ask King Sihamoni and PM Hun Sen to pardon opposition Sam Rainsy party's legislator Cheam Channy who is detained in a military prison.
The European Parliament, in a letter which VOA stringer receives states that Mr. Cheam Channy was sentenced by military court to 7 years imprisonment on charges of forming an illegal armed group, sparking a reaction from the international community and the European Parliament.
The European Parliament says that the military court has no jurisdiction on Mr. Cheam who is a civilian and a lawmaker, and there was no evidence about the armed group, and the judge did not allow witnesses to testify.
The European Parliament's Transnational Radical Party's president Marco Panella, and European Parliament's member Ms. Emma Bonino wrote letters to King Sihamoni and PM Hun Sen to pardon Mr. Cheam Channy.
Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith says that the government conducts according to legal procedures and that the international community does not understand the Cambodian situation.
The European Parliament appeals to King Sihamoni and PM Hun Sen because Mr. Cheam Channy is opposition Sam Rainsy party's (SRP) legislator, and that SRP has a seat in the European Parliament.
