PM Hun Sen Agrees to Drop All Charges Against Activists

Prime Minister Hun Sen Tuesday agrees to drop all criminal defamation lawsuits against four critics of the government, after they thanked him for allowing them to be released on bail.

Mr. Kem Sokha, and Mr. Pa Nguon Teang, both with the U.S. funded Cambodian Center for Human Rights, radio journalist Mam Sonando, and union leader Rong Chhun, wrote letters to Mr. Hun Sen.

Speaking to reporters today (Tuesday) in Phnom Penh, Mr. Hun Sen said he was satisfied by the letters from the men.

He said he will ask his lawyer and all prosecutors to withdraw the lawsuits.

He said for him the case is finished. Mr. Hun Sen added that he likes to be flexible, and that he does not like confrontation.

He added that for opposition party's leader Sam Rainsy and legislator Cheam Channy, he will deal with the case separately since they are politicians.

The four recently released activists and NGOs officials are relieved and welcome Mr. Hun Sen's move.
