Cambodia joins ASEAN in its effort to increase joint cooperation to stop and fight crimes and terrorism. The ninth annual Directors-General of Immigration Department and Heads of Consular Affairs division of Ministries of Foreign Affairs Meeting (DGICM) of ASEAN foreign ministers was held this week in Siemreap province, Cambodia.
The joint press release said that the relation and coordination between ASEAN members are important to stop transnational crimes and terrorism. The conference looks for ways to implement ASEAN's goals to combat human trafficking especially involving women and children set by ASEAN members during the 10th annual summit in Laos.
In its 2005 annual reports on human trafficking situation around the world, the US State Department placed Cambodia in tier 3 along with Burma and North Korea. And in September the United States has determined not to provide certain funding to Cambodia for fiscal year 2006, until Cambodia complies with the minimum standards of making significant efforts to bring itself into compliance with the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000.
