Political Parties Plan for Upcoming Elections

The three main political parties in Cambodia are trying to come up with reform ideas and strategies to win votes in future elections. FUNCINPEC just ended its party congress Tuesday, focusing on reforms and strategies and on strengthening a long-term alliance with the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) for peace and political stability.

High-ranking officials from the opposition Sam Rainsy party (SRP) went to the Philippines to meet with party president Sam Rainsy to discuss party structure and reforms.

CPP will also convene its congress soon to discuss strategies for upcoming elections and to strengthen partnership with the royalist FUNCINPEC party.

NGOs officials welcome all the plannings by the three main political parties but warn about such strategy that might not be democratic.

The three political parties will be participating in the senate election next year where only national assembly members and district council members have the right to vote.

Mr. Kul Panha, executive director of Comfrel, a watchdog organization for a free and fair election in Cambodia, said that he will monitor the three political party's strategies and reforms to see if the election is free and fair.
