Cambodia celebrates its 52nd independence day with religious ceremony and fireworks throughout Phnom Penh.
Fifty-two years ago today, former King Sihanouk gained independence for Cambodia from France. King Sihamoni lit the victory fire at the Independence Monument to commemorate the occasion.
President of the Senate Chea Sim, National Assembly President Prince Ranaridh, Prime Minister Hun Sen, government officials, students, legislators and senators from the ruling parties, and 35,000 military personnels attend the ceremony.
Sam Rainsy party legislator Keo Remy said this year's mood is not as happy as previous year because former King Sihanouk was absent and because of the controversial additional treaty.
Human rights activist Kem Sokha said Khmer leaders should consider the former King Sihanouk's views and ideas when they make decisions about the country.
