PM Hun Sen Supports Rights to Peaceful Protest

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said he supports the people's rights to express their views through protests.

Speaking to villagers in Kampong Speu on Friday, PM Hun Sen said people have rights to protest against him or against anybody including Sam Rainsy as long as there is no violence.

The Cambodian leader said the plan to protest against opposition party leader comes out in response to the protests against him in New York and Paris.

The Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) spokesman Ung Bun Ang applauded the prime minister's recognition of rights to protest but urged him not to pressure people to join the planned anti-Sam Rainsy protest.

President of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights Kem Sokha said it's unfair if the government allows only pro-government groups to protest and refuses permission for pro-opposition supporters.

In another development Prime Minister Hun said he has filed a libel lawsuit against opposition leader Sam Rainsy asking for 25 million dollars in damage.

Last week, Sam Rainsy and a few victims of the 97 grenade attack including an American citizen Ron Abney, filed a lawsuit in New York accusing prime minister Hun Sen of involving in the attack that killed 16 people and wounded more than one hundred others.
