Military Court-Cheam Channy Case

A military court on Monday postponed its verdict on an opposition legislator until Tuesday at the end of his trial on charges of illegally forming an armed group to overthrow Prime Minister Hun Sen's government.

Cheam Channy denied the charges. Opposition party members, human-rights activists, and observers questioned the quality of the state's evidence and described the trial as an obvious attempt to intimidate and suppress political opposition in Cambodia.

The military court judge, Ney Thol announced the one-day postponement at the hearing. Military court prosecutor, Proum San Thon, says evidence includes witness accounts and some documents signed by Cheam Channy, who is a member of parliament for the Sam Rainsy Party.

The defense lawyers, Mao Sothierith, and Ker Thy, said that there was no evidence that their client formed an armed group.

US Embassy First Secretary Don Coleman attended Monday's proceeding along with opposition party members, journalists, and human-rights activists. Coleman declined to comment on the case.
