National Supreme Magistrate Council Meets


The National Supreme Magistrate Council's (NSMC) first meeting focused on the last three decades of judicial reforms.

A nine members of the top body of the judicial system including King Sihamony decided to reform the last 30 years court system which observers and lawyers said is part of a positive judicial reforms in this country which the international community always criticized as a currupt system.

One of the nine members who asked not to be identified told VOA after the meeting that from now on all the Judges and prosecutors will be moved around every year in order to avoid corruption and to ensure the independence of the courts.

He added that the judges will no longer be allowed to be both the investigative judge and the presiding judge in the same court case.

Mr. Kao Sopha, a lawyer said that this move is good for the judicial system.

Mr. Kem Sokha, President of the Cambodia Center of Human Rights welcomes the decision.
