Bush Heads G8 Summit in Scotland

President Bush has concluded a brief visit to Denmark, departing for the Group of Eight summit in Scotland.

As he wound up his visit, Mr. Bush said he recognizes that human activity contributes to global climate change, but restated his opposition to the Kyoto accord on the issue.

At a joint news conference with Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Mr. Bush criticized the Kyoto document because it excludes many developing nations. He stressed the need to move away from fossil fuels and develop new vehicles, and said he will focus on the issue at the G-8 summit.

The U.S and Danish leaders said they discussed many issues including the Middle East, the future of the European Union, the struggle against terrorism and the importance of international assistance to Africa.

Later today (Wednesday), the president will join leaders of the world's seven leading industrial countries plus Russia at the summit in Gleneagles, Scotland. Their meeting is expected to focus on the global environment and fighting poverty in Africa

President Bush last week announced new funding for Africa. But he said he believes wealthy nations must help spur development in Africa, not simply donate money. African Union leaders have urged the world's wealthy nations to wipe out the debt of every nation on the African continent.
