Former King Norodom Sihanouk Clarifies his Duties in Border Committee

Former King Norodom Sihanouk said he has no power in solving Cambodia's border issues with its neighbors.

In a statement in Khmer from Beijing, China, where the national border committee meets today, King Sihanouk said it's the national assembly and the government that bear full responsibility in solving the border issues.

Former King Sihanouk said the royal decree that King Sihamoni signed to create the new border committee did not give the committee any power to decide on border issues.

The committee can only forward its recommendations to the national assembly.

Political scientist Lao Mong Hay said former King Sihanouk was not given full power and this reflects the different views between the former king and the government.

Sources close to the royal palace told VOA that there were some tensions in today's meeting between the members from the government and King Sihanouk over Cambodia-Vietnam border treaties from the 1980's and 1990's.

The King is said to refuse to recognize those treaties while the Cambodian government insists they are official treaties.

There's no details of what were being discussed in today's meeting except for the fact that seven members and many border experts attended under the leadership of former King Sihanouk
