As Rights Day Approaches, Cambodia's Record Disappoints

A coalition of rights groups said Friday human rights remains a major concern in Cambodia, as International Human Rights Day approaches.

While Cambodia has progressed economically, it has not matched that progress with the rule of law, independence of courts or free and fair political processes.

Monday is the 59th International Human Rights Day.

A group of advocates for the Khmer Kampuchea Krom ethnic minority said the anniversary was a chance to look at the withering rights of the marginalized group.

Ang Chanrith, director of the Khmer Kampuchea Krom Human Rights Organization, said this year saw even more serious rights violations for members of the group than 2006.
