Sam Rainsy Looks to Landless Voters to Bolster Election Chances

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy said Tuesday he would seek to mobilize landless voters ahead of national elections next year in an effort to strengthen his political position.

Speaking by phone on a tour of the US and Canada to build support for his party, Sam Rainsy said that people ejected from their land met difficulties voting in this year's commune election, which saw a low turnout of less than 70 percent.

The Sam Rainsy Party planned to help the displaced navigate the voting process in national elections next year, which could lead to more seats in the National Assembly.

Sam Rainsy also said Tuesday his party was working to bring more public officials before parliament to answer for their actions, a mandate provided in the constitution but rarely followed in the rubber-stamp Assembly.
