An European Parliament member questions the EU delagation leader's assessment of political and human rights situation in Cambodia during its visit.
This leader says that the EU delegation leader, Mr. Marc Tarabella, first Vice President of the delegation for relation between SE Asian countries and ASEAN, made an irresponsible assessment, alleges a statement Saturday.
Mr. Graham Watson, the Europen Liberal Democrats leader says that Mr. Tarabella's remarks do not reflect the Europen Union's views. In a press conference at the end of April, Mr. Tarabella says that democracy is going well in Cambodia and that the human rights situation in Cambodia is good.
Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith says that what Mr. Tarabella said about Cambodia is true, and that Mr. Watson has not been to Cambodia, thus does not know about the situation there.
Opposition party leader Sam Rainsy on the other hand says that Cambodia still lacks progress in democracy and human rights respect, and that Mr. Watson knows what he is talking about.
Mr. Tarabella criticized U.N. General Secretary Kofi Annan's special envoy on human rights to Cambodia Yash Ghai saying his comments shocked Prime Minister Hun Sen.
