The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a resolution, introduced by honoring the victims of the Cambodian genocide that took place under the Khmer Rouge from April 1975 to January 1979.
The resolution was approved late Wednesday. It also welcomes the establishment of an international criminal tribunal to bring justice to the perpetrators of the genocide.
In comments on the House floor before the resolution was passed, Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ), who is Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Global Human Rights, said he hopes the United Nations-sponsored tribunal's work will be substantive, transparent and credible.
The House resolution also praises the contributions to American society of the more than 200-thousand Cambodians living in the United States.
