The Government Stops Airing Pre-1979 Border Documents

Cambodian legislators and NGO officials on Monday welcome the government's decision to stop airing pre-1979border documents. They say the move will lessen the conflict between former King Sihanouk and Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Opposition lawmaker Keo Remy said he welcome the government's decision saying it shows respect for the former King. At the same time he said the government should release Mam Sonando and Rong Chhun from prison and stop charging others.

FUNCINPEC lawmaker Maonh Sophan said this is good because all parties think about what benefits Cambodia and its sovereignty. Mr. Kem Sokha, president of Cambodia Center for Human Rights (CCHR) said the politicians stop quarelling and are talking.

Government spokesman and Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith said the former King and King Sihamoni understand the border issues after Prime Minister Hun Sen explains the situation to them and that the King has decided to return to Cambodia on November 6.

Last week PM Hun Sen called for unity to solve border issues with its neighbors. He also ordered all television stations to broadcast all pre-1979 border negotiations between former King Sihanouk and Vietnam.
