Free Trade Union Concerns-Garment Industry-US

Free Trade Union President Chea Mony raised concerns Thursday to US officials on workers’ and union leaders’ conditions, and about the apparent impunity for those perpetrate violence, even murder, against leading union activists.

The Union leaders met with US Embassy Charge d'Affairs at his home for lunch. US Embassy spokesman, David Gainer, confirmed the meeting took place and said the primary purpose was introducing new labor officers and leading union members to embassy staff.

Cambodia Union Federation's President, Chhuon Mom Thol, said at the lunch that he raised the issue of duty free imports, which he asserted the US should give to Cambodia for at least two more years.

Commerce Minister Cham Prasith's recent visit to the US focused on lobbying US officials to allow Cambodia to resume favorable garment exportation into the US.
