Lebanon - Explosion

A car bomb has exploded near Beirut, killing two people and injuring Lebanon's outgoing Defense Minister Elias Murr, a pro-Syrian figure.

Authorities say the bomb detonated as Mr. Murr's motorcade passed through a neighborhood where many embassies and diplomatic residences are located.

At least 12 others were injured in the blast, including the wife of Mexico's ambassador.

From the hospital, Mr. Murr said he was in good health, and called on Lebanese to be steadfast as the nation undergoes what he called "a difficult period."

Syrian officials condemned the bombing, saying it was another terrorist act aimed at destabilizing Lebanon.

Similar attacks this year have killed a Lebanese journalist and two politicians, including former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. His death sparked widespread unrest in Lebanon, forcing Syria to end its 29-year military presence there.
