Former Cambodian King Expresses Optimism in Border Talks

Former King Norodom Sihanouk said he has strong confidence that Cambodia can protect its borders.

King Sihanouk said the two-day meeting on border issues in China was conducted in good atmosphere and that everyone has learned from one another in these complex border issues.

In a public statement, King Sihanouk said he is optimistic about the meeting . He stressed the unity and cooperation among all parties is the only strength that Cambodian people have to protect its borders.

However, King Sihanouk did not go into details on what all parties agreed or disagreed about in the two-day talks that has just ended.

National Assembly President Norodom Ranariddh told reporters in Phnom Penh that the border committee has agreed to use the Cambodian map from the 1960's that is stored at the United Nations.

Buth Reaksmey Kung Kea, president of the committee to protect Cambodia's borders, said the border committee's decision to use the 1960 map of Cambodia as the starting point in the negotiations with its neighbors will guarantee Cambodia's territories.

However Mr. Buth regrets that the government did not abolish the 80's and the 90's treaties with Vietnam and Thailand. The Cambodian People's Party (CPP) which signed those treaties with the two neighbors said it takes responsibilities in those border treaties.
